Haiti

Duas referências ao contexto, e ao futuro do Haiti: uma relativa à história; outra, sobre a necessidade de um tipo diferente de resposta internacional no futuro, face ao perfilar no horizonte de outros problemas graves:

Open Left:: Time for America to repay Haiti's historic gift to us: "Haiti's successful slave revolution and its defense against the French attempt to re-enslave them was directly responsible for France's abandonment of its claims in the New World, including the sale of the Louisiana Purchase, without which the US would have been permanantly hemmed in to the Eastern Seaboard. Thus, America owes more to the people of Haiti than any other people on Earth--but, with few exceptions, we have only repaid them with suffering and sorrow."

The end of Haiti? | The Economist: "This tragedy will present an interesting challenge to the global community. Oddly enough, it may be one for which they'll need the practice. Within a few decades, there will be other island communities needing to relocate on a wholesale basis. If there is any positive to be taken away from this disaster, it may be that the world has the opportunity to begin developing the institutions it will need to peacefully manage climate refugees."
