Enrico Fermi, nos anos quarenta, enunciou o paradoxo que tem o seu nome: "Se existem extra-terrestres, porque é que não aparecem?". Na verdade, podia argumentar-se que, dado o devido tempo, e com um nível tecnológico (não muito) superior ao nosso, haveriam soluções que possibilitariam qualquer espécie espalhar-se pela nossa galáxia.
